US stocks ended a down week on an up note, finishing sharply higher on the strength of energy and financial shares. It was the market's first up day since late last week. Despite the rebound Friday, the major indexes ended the week down about 1%. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 313 points, or 2%, to close at 15,973. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 35 points, or 2%, to close at 1,864. The Nasdaq composite rose 70 points, or 1.7%, to close at 4,337.

Oil jumped 12%, helping lift energy company shares. Banks shares soared, led by JP Morgan Chase's 8% gain. The financial sector has been the worst performing part of the market this year, but it led the advance Friday. (More Dow Jones stories.)
