Hoping to undercut what it says are disingenuous attacks against it, Planned Parenthood announced Tuesday it will no longer accept any compensation for donating tissue from aborted fetuses to medical research, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. "Planned Parenthood's policies on fetal tissue donation already exceed the legal requirements," Planned Parenthood president Cecile Richards says. "Now we're going even further in order to take away any basis for attacking Planned Parenthood to advance an anti-abortion political agenda." According to the AP, anti-abortion activists released undercover videos in July that purported to show Planned Parenthood illegally profiting from the sale of fetal tissue. Planned Parenthood says the videos were misleadingly edited and it was only being legally reimbursed for the cost of the program.

Planned Parenthood may lose money on its fetal tissue donation program now, the Chronicle reports. But it's unlikely to have much of an impact on the nonprofit. According to the AP, only Washington and California Planned Parenthood chapters were participating in the program, and the Washington chapter already didn't accept any reimbursement. "For Planned Parenthood, this was always about one thing—honoring the desire of women to contribute to lifesaving research," one Planned Parenthood executive says. "It was never about money." Adds another, the move "takes away the smokescreen" that led Republicans in Congress to try to defund Planned Parenthood. (More Planned Parenthood stories.)
