Bloomberg crunched census data to figure out which American cities are losing the most residents, and it turns out that El Paso, Texas, is faring the worst. "A lot of young, reasonably educated people are having a hard time finding work there," says a public policy professor at UCLA. "They're not staying in town after they graduate." Here are the eight worst-performing cities, using data from July 2013 to July 2014:
- El Paso, with a net population loss of 1.02%
- New York-Newark-Jersey City, down .81%
- New Haven-Milford, Connecticut, down .78%
- Honolulu, Hawaii, down .74%
- Hartford, Connecticut, down .71%
- (tie) Bridgeport-Stamford-Norwalk, Connecticut, down .69%
- (tie) Chicago, down .69%
- (tie) Syracuse, New York, down .69%
