Authorities in the United Arab Emirates say they have executed a woman with links to Islamic extremists who was convicted of murdering an American teacher with a butcher knife in an upscale Abu Dhabi mall. Authorities say Alaa Bader Abdullah al-Hashemi, a 30-year-old mother of six, was put to death this morning. Her execution was carried out following the approval of the president, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, just two weeks after the country's top court found her guilty of murdering 47-year-old kindergarten teacher Ibolya Ryan in a mall restroom.

Hashemi, who was arrested a few days after the attack in December last year, was also found guilty of sending money to al-Qaeda. She was also convicted of planting a bomb in front of the home of an Egyptian-American doctor and spreading harmful information online, reports the National, which notes that she was executed by firing squad. After the murder of Ryan, who was the mother of 11-year-old twins, police said Hashemi had been radicalized online and had planned to kill a foreigner at random, reports Reuters.
