Maybe he should have stolen some driving lessons first? Police in Providence, Utah, say that after 19-year-old Alexander Katz and his girlfriend allegedly stole a car on Tuesday, they ended up ditching it and calling a taxi because he didn't know how to drive a stick shift, KSL reports. But they had already been seen in the car by its owner—who was on his way to his brother's house in his girlfriend's car to see if his brother had taken his car as a prank—and police spotted the pair as they waited outside a store for the taxi.

The girlfriend, a minor, was arrested immediately while Katz—who can probably rule out a career as a criminal mastermind—took off on foot, but he was tracked down through details he had left with the taxi company, the Deseret News reports. The local police chief tells the News that the most puzzling part of the case is the fact that Katz's girlfriend knew how to drive a stick shift and had been giving him instructions as he struggled to drive the stolen vehicle. "So I'm not 100% certain why she doesn't just get around and get in the driver's seat so they can take the car and use it," he says. (Cops in Oklahoma just had to follow the grease trail to find a stolen deep-fryer.)
