'George' Is Really Regretting Those Seinfeld Comments

Jason Alexander is sort of wishing he hadn't retold an old Seinfeld story to Howard Stern on Wednesday. As Alexander, aka George Costanza, explains on TwitLonger, Stern asked about the actress who played George's fiancee Susan, who was killed by toxic glue on the show. When Stern said, "Julia [Louis-Dreyfus] told me you all wanted to kill her," Alexander explains, he wanted to clarify that "no one wanted to kill Heidi [Swedberg]," the actress. But in doing so, he managed to tell the story in such a way as to prompt headlines like "Seinfeld cast hated Susan so Larry David killed her off." In his apology post yesterday, Alexander notes that he feels "officially awful" and begs, "Oh dear God, leave Heidi alone. ... She was generous and gracious and I am so mad at myself for retelling this story in any way that would diminish her."

"I and the cast really liked and like Heidi. She is a kind, lovely person who undoubtedly worked really hard to create Susan and that character was clearly what Larry and Jerry wanted her to be for George. I just felt I was on uncertain ground in how to play off that character and I was always concerned that it wasn't working," Alexander writes, adding that Swedberg often asked for feedback, and "if I had had more maturity or more security in my own work, I surely would have taken her query and possibly tried to adjust the scenes with her." As for the Seinfeld stars joking about killing her off, he notes, they meant Susan, not Heidi—and since Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld "were always looking for an inventive end to the engagement," the idea took hold. "I actually launched into this on Stern to defend" Swedberg, he concludes. "But this is why I'm not a lawyer." (Check out 25 stars you didn't know were on Seinfeld.)
