Niklas Hagman's hat trick for Dallas was eclipsed by new acquisition Brad Richards' five assists against a Chicago team that had also tried to nab him. After the Stars' 7-4 win, Richards can be glad the trade sent him where it did. "I'm just so happy to be a part of this," he told the Chicago Tribune. Elsewhere in the NHL:

  • Phoenix collected its sixth straight home win while completing a four-game season sweep of St. Louis with a 2-1 game that saw a season-high 42 shots on goal by the Blues.
  • Atlanta clawed its way out of a three-point hole to tie the score, but an overtime goal by Trent Hunter put the Islanders up 5-4.
