Dog Dumped at Train Station With His Things in Suitcase

Abandoning an animal is wrong—even if you leave it with its belongings, say animal welfare authorities in Scotland, who are trying to trace an owner who left a young dog tied to a railing outside a train station next to a suitcase that contained a pillow, a toy, some food, and a bowl. The 2-year-old male Shar-Pei crossbreed is named Kai, the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals determined after checking his microchip, but the owners who microchipped him say they sold him online in 2013 and don't know the new owner's address, reports the Guardian.

Kai is "a lovely dog with a nice nature," says an SPCA official. The group says it is looking after him until it can "find him a permanent and loving home," which shouldn't take long: Many people offered to adopt Kai after seeing touching photos of him sitting outside the train station waiting for his owner to return, CNN reports. Abandoning animals is illegal in Scotland, and if authorities manage to track down the neglectful owner, he or she could end up being permanently banned from keeping pets. (More Scotland stories.)
