A classy move by an NFL player and a heroic one by an 8-year-old make the list:

  • Deaf NFL Player Exchanges Letters With Girl He Inspired: The Seahawks' Derrick Coleman is legally deaf, a fact that millions of people have discovered via a popular ad featuring the player. But now a nice side story: A hearing-impaired girl wrote him a letter of thanks and inspiration, and Coleman responded with a hand-written letter of his own.
  • 8-Year-Old Saves 6 in Fire Before His Own Death: An 8-year-old boy managed to wake six people and get them out of a burning trailer in upstate New York, but fire officials say the boy himself was killed as he tried to rescue yet another relative. "He saved those other six people," says the fire chief.
  • Bus Passengers Subdue Attacker, Prevent Crash: A bizarre incident on a Greyhound bus in Arizona resulted in injuries to more than 20 people, but police say quick-thinking passengers prevented it from being much, much worse. They joined together to subdue a man who began attacking the bus driver, and got the bus stopped in the nick of time.
  • Mathematician Cracks OkCupid, Finds Wife: First, there was boy meets girl. Then, boy meets girl online. And now, boy meets girl online after manipulating the algorithms of his Internet dating site. He still had to go on nearly 90 first dates, but he finally found his wife-to-be.
  • Man Was Trying to Save Stranger When Killed by Train: Surveillance footage from Caltrain sheds light on why a 35-year-old man was fatally struck by a train in Santa Clara. He was trying to rescue someone else on the tracks.
