Cruises are about more than just eating as much as possible, lounging by the pool, and wandering around port cities. As Fox News reports, they can also get you to some of the biggest events of the year. A sample:

  • Australian Open: One of the four annual Grand Slam tennis events, the Open will be held Jan. 13 to 26 next year in Melbourne. Silversea offers a three-night package to attend a few matches, then embark on a 15-night cruise.
  • Mardi Gras: Carnival, Royal Caribbean, and Norwegian all offer cruises that leave from New Orleans during the party season, which will be Feb. 15 through March 4 next year.
  • Carnival: Brazil's big celebration is also held in the days leading up to lent—Feb. 28 to March 4 next year—and you can stop by Rio de Janeiro during the festivities on an MSC Orchestra or Pullmantur cruise. Need more time? Holland America's Maasdam will be in Rio for three days.

  • Grand Prix: If you want to catch the Formula One race in Monaco, which is going on May 22 to May 25 next year, consider Star Clippers' cruise on the Star Flyer, leaving Cannes on May 17. It also stops in Corsica, St. Tropez, and Italy.
  • FIFA World Cup: The finals are taking place in Brazil June 12 to July 13 next year, and MSC Cruises offers an 18-night voyage from Miami that will end up in Rio while it's on.
