A Texas store owner who police say shot an alleged beer thief Saturday night has been charged with murder, KRIS TV reports. Police say Rodney Duve, 51, shot the 39-year-old man—a known gang member, KZTV reports—in the doorway of his Corpus Christi store as the man attempted to leave without paying. Neighbors, not surprisingly, are split: "He didn't have to shoot the person for two cases of beer. A life doesn't equal two cases of beer," says one. But "I probably would've done the same thing," says another. "It's one of those things where how many times can you be pushed until you fight back. Everybody has their limit."
The Christian Post has this legal explainer, from the DA: "Generally speaking you can use deadly force in self-defense of yourself or another person ... the law changes a little bit when we talk about deadly force in defense of property. … First off, it's got to be reasonable. … Or it has to be while you're in the course of someone committing robbery, aggravated robbery, burglary, rape, kidnapping, things like that."
