At a press conference following the Senate's rejection of a bill to defund ObamaCare, President Obama urged House Republicans to pass a short-term spending bill at the 11th hour. He warned that a government shutdown tonight would "throw a wrench into the gears" of economic recovery and have a "very real economic impact" on ordinary Americans, Al Jazeera reports. "And as a consequence, all of us would be hurt gravely should the congress choose to to shut the people's government down," he said, per NBC. "A shutdown will have a very real impact on real people right away."
Obama also accused Republicans of trying to delay and defund ObamaCare and shutdown the government to "save face after making some impossible promises to the extreme right wing of their party," and enact revenge for last year's election results, USA Today reports. "One faction of one party in one house of Congress in one branch of government doesn't get to shut down the entire government just to re-fight the results of an election," he said, per NBC.
