Senate Passes Historic Immigration Bill

The Senate passed a historic immigration bill today by a vote of 68 to 32, with every Democrat and 14 Republicans voting in favor, the Washington Post reports. Joe Biden presided over the vote to note its significance, and Marco Rubio gave a stirring final argument in favor for the bill ahead of the vote, discussing his own parents' journey to the US. "We focus so much on how immigrants can change America that we forget America has always changed immigrants even more," he said, according to CBS News.

Fellow Gang of Eight member John McCain joked that he knew the bill would pass, "because I was sure I was going to get out of prison one day." But the bill isn't exactly sailing toward President Obama's desk; first it has to clear the Republican-controlled House, where its central provision, the path to citizenship, faces stiff opposition, the AP reports.
