Two police officers were gunned down as they investigated a suspicious vehicle report in Topeka yesterday. A gunman shot David Gogian, 50, and Jeff Atherly, 29, from the vehicle minutes after they arrived on the scene as backup for another officer, police say. "It's unspeakable, almost, about why this happens and why this is happening in America at this stage in our history," said Topeka's police chief.

He hasn't said why the vehicle was suspicious. Police later found it about 10 blocks from the grocery store where the shooting occurred. They're now seeking a 22-year-old man with a criminal history in the attack, the AP reports. (More police stories.)
