The North American death toll from Sandy has risen above 40 and the superstorm claimed lives in a chilling variety of ways, the New York Times finds. Most victims were killed by falling trees, including numerous people who were crushed as they sheltered inside their homes and an 8-year-old Pennsylvania boy who was hit by a tree as he checked on the family's calves, but there were also drownings, car accidents, and at least one death caused by a fallen power line.

A 75-year-old woman on a respirator died after the power blinked off, and one man died after floodwaters swept him out of his house and through a store's glass window. In Toronto, a woman was killed by metal debris from a sign that flew off a Staples store. Some storm deaths are still unexplained, including those of a parking lot attendant found dead in a subterranean garage in Manhattan and a woman whose body washed up on a Long Island beach.
