Romney: No One's Asked for My Birth Certificate

He cracks a birther joke on the trail

Mitt Romney gave something of a "birther" shout-out at a campaign stop in Michigan today. "I love being home in this place where Ann and I were raised, where both of us were born," he told a crowd at a rally in front of a farm. "No one's ever asked to see my birth certificate. They know that this is the place that we were born and raised." The crowd laughed and cheered, the Hill reports.

The joke is obviously a reference to the false rumors that Barack Obama wasn't born in the US. "Governor Romney’s decision to directly enlist himself in the birther movement should give pause to any rational voter," an Obama spokesperson says. But a Romney spokesperson downplayed the remark, saying that Romney "has repeatedly said he believes the president was born here in the United States." (More Mitt Romney stories.)
