Todd Stave is the landlord to an abortion clinic in Germantown, Md, that is especially controversial because it offers late-term abortions. Stave has no problem with protesters outside the clinic—"totally appropriate"—but when they started bombarding his home with phone calls, he decided to fight back with similar tactics, writes Petula Dvorak in the Washington Post. He took down names and numbers of those who called, then distributed the lists to a small army of friends and supporters.
“In a very calm, very respectful voice, they said that the Stave family thanks you for your prayers,” he said. “They cannot terminate the lease, and they do not want to. They support women’s rights.” Some protesters got 5,000 calls. “We gave them back what they gave us." At this point, about 3,000 people have volunteered to make calls, and Stave has set up a group called Voice of Choice to help other clinics. But his own foes seem to be ramping up efforts in response. This week, one showed up outside the dental clinic where his brother-in-law works. (More abortion debate stories.)
