If you're jonesing for a trip on the wild side, well, you'd probably still better steer clear of the 10 worst places in the world. Gadling.com rounds up these impoverished and war-stricken locales, and advises avoiding them in 2012:
- Harare, Zimbabwe: This city spiraled into turmoil when inflation surged, eventually hitting 231,150,000% per year in 2008. Unemployment hit 80%, services collapsed, and now most of Harare is in ruins.
- Rocinha favela, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil: Rio's largest slum crams several hundred thousand destitute residents onto a steep anarchic hillside. Federal forces recently occupied the favela in order to boot drug cartels ahead of Brazil's Olympics.
- Ciudad Juarez, Mexico: Separated by a river from El Paso, which boasts among the US' lowest murder rates, Juarez has instead fallen victim to Mexico's drug war; it has been referred to as the murder capital of the world.
- Mogadishu, Somalia: Machine guns routinely solve traffic jams, pirates abound, and the "Mog" is known as the most lawless city on the planet. Steer clear.
