The New Jersey Devils honored Hall-of-Famer Scott Stevens before the game, then  reminded him of their three Stanley Cup seasons, defeating Washington, 3-2 for their ninth consecutive win. The Devils got two goals in a four-minute span in the first period against Capitals netminder Olaf Kolzig. Martin Brodeur made 23 saves for the win. Elsewhere on the frozen pond:

  • Florida netted two power play goals and the New York Islanders' offense disappeared again as the Panthers won 3-0. Tomas Vokoun had 25 saves for his 23rd career shutout. The Isles have lost five straight.
  • In a battle of backup goalies, Atlanta defeated the New York Rangers, with the game-winner coming from Slava Kozlov with five minutes left.
