Violence in Syria is growing worse as the uprising against the regime continues. Some 30 civilians and 26 soldiers were killed yesterday, activists tell MSNBC. Soldiers were killed in a series of ambushes, while government forces killed civilians at protests and in building raids. During a rally, protesters chanted, “We are going to heaven, martyrs in the millions.”
The past month has seen one of the highest daily death tolls in the seven-month-old uprising. Arab states are set to meet tomorrow to discuss the situation, but their divergent perspectives make clear action—for example, freezing Syria’s Arab League membership—unlikely. An Arab Peace Plan established last week has done little to quell violence, with some 104 people reported killed in Homs since then. (More Syria stories.)
