Police are struggling to restore order on the streets of London after three days of rioting and looting. Here are some updates from the Telegraph's exhaustive coverage:

  • David Cameron seemed to criticized the police effort, saying it needed to be “more robust,” and saying that the number of officers on the street tonight would swell from 6,000 to 16,000, with all police leave canceled.
  • In an ironic turn, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has urged the British police to “show restraint” and said it would ask human rights organizations to investigate the fatal shooting that precipitated the riots.

  • China has chimed in as well, questioning whether the London Olympics will be safe.
  • In Birmingham, the chief constable says about 800 people took part in the riots—and that it was a “greedy” rather than “angry” crowd, full of “astonishingly young” looters. He urged their parents to hand them in.
  • Police are also now using CCTV to identify looters, posting galleries of suspects online.
  • The BBC has come under fire for referring to rioters as “protesters,” despite escalating violence.
  • And finally, there’s this delightful story of the kitchen staff at a 2-Michelin-star restaurant fighting off rioters with rolling pins and frying pans, calming diners by serving them champagne and whisky, then hiding them in the wine cellar.
