Facebook Messages Is 'Not Email,' Says Zuckerberg

Facebook today unveiled "Messages," which has been hyped as its "Gmail killer—but Mark Zuckerberg instantly threw his audience a curve ball. “It’s not email,” the CEO announced, according to the Guardian. “This is not an email-killer. This is a messaging system that includes email as one part of it.” So yes, Facebook is about to start handing out @Facebook.com email addresses, but the new system will look more like chat than traditional email, Zuckberg explained, and will integrate text messaging and instant messaging as well.

And kiss your subject lines goodbye, because the “threading model is very archaic,” Zuckerberg complained. “In real life, you have a stream of conversation.” So all messages with a person in Facebook will be in a single thread, sort of like a chat log, no matter what medium was used to send the message. The system’s other big selling point: The Social Inbox. Since Facebook knows who your friends are, Zuckerberg is promising it can filter “exactly the messages you want to see.” For more, see the Huffington Post. (More Mark Zuckerberg stories.)
