At least 30% of the Nazi war machine—more than previously thought—was funded by the looting of Jews and other enemies of state, says new research from German historians. The money got routed through Hitler's Finance Ministry, which had long been portrayed as "politically neutral" and unassociated with Nazi atrocities, reports Reuters.

"What was obscured behind that image was the indispensable contribution made by the Reich Finance Ministry towards the functioning, the stability and the criminal policies of the Nazi regime," says one of the historians. The finding adds to a growing body of research showing that German diplomats knew far more about the Holocaust than was thought.
