After more than two weeks of horse trading and backroom deals, the three independents at the center of Australia's knife-edge election have made their choice: Julia Gillard. While the right-wing Bob Katter broke with bloc to throw his support behind the Liberal/National Coalition of Tony Abbott, Rob Oakeshott and Tony Windsor used their "kingmaker" powers to nudge the incumbent Australian Labor Party over the line by a solitary seat, reports Australia's ABC.

At a Canberra media conference, Ninemsn reports that a low-key Gillard pledged accountability: "I know that if we fail in this solemn responsibility, we will be judged harshly when we next face the Australian people at the next election," she said.
