Sharron Angle is embroiled in her weirdest controversy yet, with a small-town newspaper columnist who alleges that she once led a religious crusade against black football jerseys. Bill Roberts of the Pahrump Valley Times recalls that in 1992, the year Angle first entered politics with a school board run, she led an outcry against a high school team’s plan to wear a black jersey for its homecoming game, because she associated the color with the devil.

“I cannot quote scripture as they did to justify their point but the gist of their argument was that black as a color was thoroughly evil,” writes Roberts, whose son was on the team. Angle was successful, and the school confiscated the jerseys, which the players had purchased themselves, he says. The story’s gotten widespread play, but Angle says it never happened. “Bill Roberts loves Harry (Reid),” Angle tells the Reno Gazette-Journal. “I have completely different recollections of what happened.” (More Sharron Angle stories.)
