It didn't take long for what promises to be one of the most entertainment races of the fall to get into gear. A day after winning their party nominations in the California governor's race, Jerry Brown and Meg Whitman were already at it. Samples, from the Los Angeles Times:

  • Brown: "She talks about waste and abuse. She paid herself $120 million, and then eBay had to lay off 10% of its workforce. Now, is that waste and abuse? Is that what you want?"

  • Whitman: "What I would say is Jerry Brown, instead of calling for debates, he should lay out his plan for California. ... Go to Jerry Brown's website, there's nothing there."
  • Brown: "Whitman only has a history of spending money wildly to get whatever she wants."
  • Whitman: "I am delighted with the results," when told her personal investment of $71 million in the primary amounted to about $90 per vote.
