No big surprise with these poll numbers: The public is paying close attention to the Gulf oil spill and thinks pretty much everyone involved is doing lousy work, including President Obama. Highlights from the USA Today/Gallup poll:

  • About 75% say BP is doing a "poor" or "very poor" job.
  • 53% say the same of Obama, and 60% say it of the federal government.

  • Most say protection of the environment should be a priority, "even at the risk of limiting energy supplies." The 55%-39% split marks a reversal from March, when the numbers were 50%-43% the other way.
  • Most, however, still favor offshore drilling: 52% vs. 44%.
  • More than two-thirds say BP should be in charge of the cleanup, not the US.
