A 12-year-old New York City girl was arrested this week for doodling on her school desk in erasable marker and has been suspended. Alexa Gonzalez, who wrote “I love my friends” and “Lex was here,” says she "started crying, like, a lot" after being handcuffed. "I just thought I'd get a detention," she tells the Daily News.

That’s not what happened. Instead, she was detained at a police precinct across the street from her school. She hasn’t been back to school since Monday. “Based on what we’ve seen so far, this shouldn’t have happened," an education department rep says. Adds an NYPD rep: “Even when we're asked to make an arrest, common sense should prevail.” (More Alexa Gonzalez stories.)
