Texas Tech fired football coach Mike Leach today following a player's accusation of mistreatment. The school delivered the news to Leach's attorney just before a hearing to determine whether the suspended Leach could be reinstated, reports the Houston Chronicle. “He’s not thrilled,” says his lawyer. The move comes two days after a player accused Leach of locking him in a dark room on two occasions when he told the coach that he couldn't practice because of a concussion.

“We can guarantee that the fight has just begun,” the lawyer continues. If Leach’s contract stands, he will collect the $1.6 million due him for the remaining 4 years. He could also stand to gain an $800,000 bonus that was to be paid out tomorrow. Baylor coach Art Briles is on the short list to replace Leach, who took the Red Raiders to a bowl game for each of the 10 years he led them. (More Mike Leach stories.)
