A judge nominated by Reagan but endorsed by liberals may be Bush’s pick to replace Alberto Gonzalez, CNN reports. Michael B. Mukasey, 66, a high-profile judge for more than 15 years, is now on the short list of rumored attorney general candidates. Analysts say that Mukasey is ideal for a lame duck president who wants to avoid a long confirmation battle.

Solicitor General Ted Olson would provoke such a fight if nominated by Bush, leading Dems warn. Ironically, Mukasey could rouse the ire of conservatives who are wary of his liberal support. Mukasey gained attention for presiding over popular trials, including that of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman, who was convicted of planning to attack several New York landmarks in 1995.
