Heard Gupta's Swine Flu Spiel? Well, He Got It, Too

CNN doc, and onetime Surgeon General candidate, falls ill in Afghanistan

Now just imagine how embarrassing this would’ve been if he had been Surgeon General: Sanjay Gupta, CNN’s medical talking head, got swine flu on a recent reporting trip to Afghanistan, he writes in a blog post today. “I am not someone who gets sick, really ever,” he writes. “And this was the sickest I have ever been.”

“It is worth pointing out the irony of a medical reporter getting influenza type A,” Gupta notes, adding that he got to visit a battlefield hospital as an actual patient. And now we know he’s not just regurgitating what your own doctor might tell you. “It was a lot like … the flu—with a different name.”
