About 15 members of the Kennedy clan gathered with Joe Biden today at the burial ceremony of Edward Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery, the Washington Post reports. An honor guard carried the senator's coffin to an area between two maple trees, near the graves of Kennedy's brothers, John and Robert. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, a friend of Kennedy's, presided over a short ceremony known as the Rite of Committal and Prayer of Commendation.
Hardly an hour before, Kennedy's funeral motorcade passed the Senate steps in Washington, where about 1,000 staffers and lawmakers past and present gathered a glimpse of the flag-covered casket. Sens. Robert Byrd and Patrick Leahy were among those who erupted into applause when the motorcade arrived. Kennedy's widow, Victoria Kennedy, hugged many people on the lower steps before the crowd lowered their heads to sing "America the Beautiful."
