Freeman Tapped to Start for Miami
Former starting quarterback, Kyle Wright, prepares for the field. "Kyle and I spoke plenty of times. He told me he's not upset with me. He has no reason to be," Freeman said.   (Getty Images)

Kirby Freeman will be at the helm when Miami opens its season against Marshall on Saturday at the Orange Bowl. The redshirt junior, who was 2-2 in four starts last year, steps into the shoes of friend and ex-starter Kyle Wright, who ended last season early due to injury and is currently nursing a sore knee.

Both quarterbacks may end up playing Saturday, but coach Randy Shannon declined to say whether he would take advantage of their different styles, the Miami Herald reports. Freeman finished 2006 with a 54.6 completion percentage and eight interceptions in as many games; Wright connected on 60.8% with seven interceptions while racking up a 5-4 record.
