New York may be expensive and unemployed, but high marks for “coolness” and online dating participation have it atop this year’s Forbes list of best cities for singles. As the economy stifles ambition, the dating number has become more significant. “When things are tough, core needs are most important,” a sociologist says. “And love— someone to share your life with—is a core need.” The rest of the top 5:

  1. Boston: Cheaper, if not quite as cool as New York, and the university town is "ideal for those unsure about their future prospects."
  2. Chicago: Kudos for high online dating rankings, and the city's prospects for job growth through 2014 are much better than Boston or New York.
  3. Seattle: The Northwest city is hopping, with tons of nightlife and things to do, and employment is poised to weather the economic storm.
  4. Washington: The capital has a robust online dating scene and—surprise—jobs. With unemployment at just 6.2%, DC "is a promising spot for those who are single as well as ambitious."
