Love for the UK star is less than genuine

Sure, the eye-rollers in the Britain’s Got Talent audience got over it fast when Susan Boyle sang. Yes, the YouTube celebrity quickly became one of our most beloved pop-culture figures. But “people can turn back into snarky snobs just as easily,” warns Tom Bergeron in the New York Times, and “some already have.” Bergeron, the host of Dancing With the Stars, has one piece of advice for Boyle as she ponders her next step: “Run away.”

After all, he muses, the same people who once shouted “Yes we can!” are “already grumbling about our president’s choice of puppy and asking whether his wife’s arms are too toned for national magazines.” When it comes down to it, “communal euphoria” won’t sell magazines forever, and “many of the people looking at Ms. Boyle now are just seeing dollar signs.
