Hijacker of Canadian Jet Surrenders

The hijacker of a Canadian jet demanding to fly from Jamaica to Cuba has freed the six crewmembers he was holding and surrendered, reports the BBC. The man, whom authorities described as "mentally challenged," appeared to check in normally last night, then forced his way aboard the CanJet charter flight brandishing a weapon. No one was injured.

The man's father had been on the scene in a bid to convince his son to surrender, CNN reports. The flight originated in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and made a scheduled landing in Montego Bay when the hijacker grabbed several hostages and demanded money, witnesses said. He released all 182 passengers a short time later.
