The US trade embargo against Cuba won’t be ending anytime soon, President Obama’s economic adviser insisted today. “That’s way down the road, and it’s going to depend on what Cuba does going forward,” Lawrence Summers told NBC’s Meet the Press, saying Obama’s actions are “grounded in American interests, grounded in morality, letting families get back together again.”

Obama is out of the country, but his controversial actions remained Topic A on the Sunday talk shows:

  • CIA Director Michael Hayden said he opposed Obama’s decision this week to release interrogation techniques, fearing it would hamstring intelligence officers. CIA interrogation is “the real inconvenient truth,” Hayden told Fox News Sunday.
  • Sen. John Ensign called Obama “irresponsible” for engaging with Hugo Chavez. “You have to be careful who you’re seen joking around with,” the Nevada Republican said.
  • Pressed on CNN about her department’s contention that extremists were targeting veterans, Janet Napolitano expressed regret about the “politicization” of the report, which “is not saying that veterans are extremists, far from it,” she said.
  • On ABC’s This Week, Rahm Emanuel said the White House has enough “resources on hand” to avoid asking Congress for more bailout money and that the feds “will be able to avoid” temporary bank nationalization.
  • David Axelrod isn’t gun-shy when it comes to the NRA, telling CBS’ Face the Nation that the White House isn’t afraid to battle the group on a new assault weapons ban, but added the US first needs to deal with trouble along its Mexican border.
