Britain's newest celebrity singer doesn't fit the stereotype, and even Simon Cowell is mightily impressed. Susan Boyle, 48, amazed the nation with her turn on the show Britain's Got Talent, ABC News reports. Boyle is more likely to be described as frumpy than glamorous, and when she appeared on stage, she endured snickers from the audience and smirks from Cowell and the other judges. Then she sang and shut everyone up.

"I think we were all guilty of being cynical before," said another judge after Boyle's performance of "I Dreamed a Dream" from Les Miserables. "It was a complete privilege to hear you." Boyle, who said she's "never even been kissed," is poised to win the show and is already a YouTube sensation. "I knew the minute you walked out on that stage that we were going to hear something extraordinary," said Cowell, who seemed somewhat more skeptical before she sang. (More Simon Cowell stories.)
