A truck filled with explosives crashed into a police headquarters in Mosul today, killing five American soldiers and two Iraqi policemen. The suicide attack was the deadliest single incident involving US troops this year, the AP reports. The chief of operations in Mosul said the policemen were the target, and the US casualties were simply a matter of "bad timing."

Two people are being held in connection with the attack, which came during a relatively quiet week in the region. The explosion also injured one other US soldier and 17 Iraqi policemen. The attack seems to bolster Gen. Raymond Odierno's statements that the US may need to leave troops in Mosul and other cities past the June 30 pullout date.
