There are certain things men cannot do without, that if lost “we would briefly mourn and immediately replace.” Esquire offers up 31 male necessities.

  • Cast-iron skillet: "it will last longer than you."
  • Waiter's corkscrew: corkscrews should not "require instruction manuals."
  • WD-40: "a man's house should involve no squeaking."
  • A weekend shoulder bag: should fit everything you need for a jaunt out of town.
  • "Giant wool blanket never removed from trunk of car."

  • Chain saw and ax: for the tree that fell in your driveway.
  • Work gloves: one pair for summer, one for winter.
  • Boots: one pair for the garage, one for "everywhere else."
  • A good heavy hammer: "because gravity."
  • Chef's knife: "cooking becomes a craft, not a chore."
  • An atlas: "the man who only uses a GPS is half a man."
  • Jumper cables: "for the stranger stuck in the parking lot."
  • Grease: "something made of dinosaurs."
  • Lucky charm: "gives the comfort of faith to the faithless."
  • $1,000 hidden in your house: nuff said.
