6 Car Bombs Kill 34 in Baghdad

Six car bombs exploded across Baghdad today, killing at least 34 and injuring scores more, Reuters reports. Four early blasts occurred within two hours, with the last two hitting within just minutes of each other. One of those, an attack on Sadr City, wounded 65 and killed at least 10, including three women and four children. Two more explosions later rocked a market, killing at least 12.

One witness said he rushed to the scene after the explosion and saw “several people dead and some burned. When the Iraqi army forces arrived, they began firing randomly at people gathered to disperse them.” The violence follows a week of arrests by the Shiite-led government of Sunni Awakening fighters, and one Baghdad University professor said it was “not unlikely” that the bombings could be a response.
