In Curt Schilling's first start since a stint on the DL, the righty gave up four runs in six frames, including a go-ahead solo shot by the 5'8", 165-pound Maicer Izturis. It was Izturis's third home run of the year. Schilling's opposite number, Jered Weaver, yielded only Kevin Youkilis's two-run shot in the third, and the bullpen preserved the 4-2 win.
The Halos got their insurance run on a rare play in which rookie Jeff Mathis bolted home from third on a sacrifice fly that had not been caught yet; left fielder Brandon Moss had bobbled the ball, but the umpire ruled that the runner could leave on initial contact. Moss replaced Manny Ramirez after the mercurial slugger was ejected. (More MLB stories.)
