Conservative blogs went into overdrive Tuesday when an audio clip of Hillary Clinton "putting on" a southern drawl began circulating, but the accent was more miscalculated than counterfeit. The clip was culled from a speech in Selma in which Clinton quoted a hymn written in vernacular. Conservative commentators went to town, chiding her for trying to pass off the dialect as her own, calling it "Hillary-fried chicken."

Greg Sargent at Talking Point Memo's media blog noted that Hilary attempted the dialect only when she quoted the lines of what she called "James Cleveland's great freedom hymn," which begins with the lines "I don't feel no ways tired/I come too far from where I started from." "Hillary's real sins here were being corny as hell and painfully tone deaf. But phony this wasn't," Sargent writes. (More blogosphere stories.)
