Brett Favre has quietly instructed his agent to tell the Jets that he plans to retire, ESPN reports. After last year's tearful train wreck, Favre is skipping the farewell press conference, but he did send an email saying he has no regrets. “My time with the Jets was short,” he said, “but I’m honored to be given that chance.”

A Jets official said last night that no formal word had come from Favre, but “that can change at any minute.” Favre, 39, had hinted he might retire a week after the Jets’ season ended, telling ESPN, “I have the ability to turn it off, just like that. I don’t feel I have anything else to prove.” (More Brett Favre stories.)
