NY Times: Impeach Gonzales

A scathing editorial in today's New York Times calls for the appointment of a special prosecutor to investigate Alberto Gonzales' "words and deeds" and concludes with an unequivocal recommendation: "If that does not happen, Congress should impeach Mr. Gonzales." The call comes as the White House attempts to resolve apparent contradictions in the AG's recent Senate testimony.

The Times editorial board focuses on the Justice Department's internal conflict over the warrantless wiretapping program, which by most accounts came to a head in 2004. THe AG has denied there was disagreement, which the Times takes as a sign that "Mr. Gonzales is more concerned about doing political-damage control for Mr. Bush than in doing his duty."
