Technical snags and lawsuits are holding up the release of hundreds of millions of Bush White House emails to the National Archives, the Washington Post reports. Historians and nonprofits are in a legal battle with the White House, as administration officials sift through backup tapes to recover lost documents. "We are worried," said the director of a historical association. "There is a context that is not reassuring."

The coalition accuses Cheney of skirting a law requiring the release of his records, saying the VP is manipulating “a loophole . . . large enough to drive truckloads of documents through.” Controversy over White House electronic records is not unusual—Ronald Reagan tried to erase his share—but “the situation is exponentially worse” under Bush due to the number of emails, said the National Archives director.
