President Trump has repeated his claims that the US "needs" Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, while ridiculing Denmark's security presence there. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump was asked about possible US moves involving Greenland following his administration's capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and his wife on Saturday. Trump initially tried to steer the discussion away from the Arctic territory, saying the US would "worry about Greenland" later, per Mediaite. But he stayed on the topic even so, repeating that the United States "needs" Greenland because of its "strategic" location.

Trump described Greenland as vital to US national security and claimed it is now "covered with Russian and Chinese ships all over the place," arguing that Denmark is not capable of providing sufficient defense. He went on to mock security measures in the territory, saying Denmark had "added one more dog sled" and "thought that was a great move." He has made similar assertions in past interviews, while also floating the idea that the US should seek to acquire the territory.

The government of Denmark, a NATO member, pushed back over the weekend. Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen issued a statement calling Trump's threats nonsensical and stressing that the US has "no legal basis to annex" Greenland. Greenland Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen also called for an end to Trump's "fantasies of annexation," per the BBC. Those comments followed a rebuke from Denmark's ambassador to Washington after Katie Miller, a White House aide and wife of senior adviser Stephen Miller, posted an image of Greenland covered in the American flag with the caption "SOON." Ambassador Jesper Møller Sørensen replied that Greenland expects full respect for the kingdom's territorial integrity.
