The humpback whale calf who mistook a yacht for its mother in the waters off Sydney is unlikely to survive the week, reports the Australian. "It has to get humpback whale milk and there is no way that that can be provided in captivity" said a government environmental official. "Unless it finds its mother or a foster mum, its chances are very, very small."
The calf was separated from the yacht after authorities towed the boat out to sea. Other whales passed by, but the calf returned to the area where the yacht was floating. "This may well be nature taking its course but nonetheless we are doing all we can to help," said the official.
