Many Americans believe God can intervene to save dying patients, a new survey shows. More than half say that God can revive a family member declared lost by doctors, and nearly 75% agree that patients are justified in seeking extra treatment. "Sensitivity to this belief will promote development of a trusting relationship" between doctors and families, researchers said.
Only about a fifth of doctors and medical personnel say God could save a dying patient, the AP reports. Conducted 3 years ago, the survey dealt with surprise deaths that are more difficult for families to accept. One doctor said it's important to balance respect with the medical truth. "It's not that you don't want a miracle to happen," he said, "it's just that it's not going to happen today with this patient." (More faith stories.)
