A rapidly spreading wildfire, just outside South Lake Tahoe in northern California, has  destroyed 165 structures and ravaged 2000 acres of heavily wooded land, the Los Angeles Times reports. Hundreds more buildings are threatened and nearly a thousand people have been evacuated from nearby communities. There are no injuries reported so far.

The cause of the fire, which started on Sunday afternoon, is not known, but strong winds and dry terrain allowed it to move quickly. (Snowfall in the area this past winter  was well below average.) "It's a grim situation," South Tahoe mayor Kathay Lovell said of the blaze. (More South Lake Tahoe stories.)
